From the College Principal
This term we launched our new College hymn, which was the result of a collaborative process involving students from across the three schools, our Chaplain Fr Roberto Keryakos, our Family Educator Mrs Angella Mills, our acting Instructional Leader of Music Dr Roberts and The Director of Music at the Cathedral, Mr Daniel Justin. It was beautifully sung by the massed choir at the concert. This is a beautiful tribute to Mary, acknowledging her role as our patroness and guiding our community to Christ through her intercession.
The hymn is outlined below:

O Christ, our Lord and Saviour blest,
Our King, our hope, our surest rest.
Uphold us with your strength and might,
And lead us in your heavenly light.
O Help of Christians, be our guide
To bear your name with love and pride.
With hearts so brave and ever true
We place our trust alone in you.
Teach us, O Lord, to walk as Saints:
Both pure in heart and strong in faith.
Unite us in your boundless love,
And lead us to our home above.
In Christ we place our hope and trust,
We praise you, Lord, forever just.
And when our earthly way is done,
Pray for us, Mary, chosen one..

NAIDOC WEEK
2025 is the 50th anniversary of NAIDOC Week, and the theme this year is ‘The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy’, which celebrates the achievements of the past and looks to a bright vision for the future. Celebrations take place between 6-13 July 2025. NAIDOC Week is a time of recognition of the significance of the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
INQUIRY AND REVIEW PROCESS
We are very happy to share an update on our recent Inquiry & Review process, a vital opportunity for our college to reflect on our journey of continuous improvement as an effective Catholic school. This comprehensive review process allowed us to assess our progress and identify future directions, all while being supported and challenged by an external Review Team from Sydney Catholic Schools. The college performed exceptionally well throughout this rigorous review and the outstanding feedback we received is a true testament to the dedication, hard work, and commitment of our entire staff. Their unwavering efforts and pursuit of excellence are the driving force behind our success and the continued growth of our students.
ANNUAL MUSIC CONCERT
It was a privilege to witness the incredible talent on display at our Annual Music Concert at the Town Hall. With the 2025 theme of unity woven through every performance, the concert truly showcased the remarkable collaborative spirit of our students and staff. A most sincere thank you is extended to Dr Roberts, our Concert Director and the driving force behind this year's theme and to Dr Hopkins for his tireless work, particularly with the Middle School. As I stated at the concert, music at St Mary’s has always been more than a lesson or co-curricular activity, it is a tradition, a ministry, and a source of pride. It brings together students of all ages, unites our community, and strengthens our identity. In music, we see what our College aspires to be: a place united in creativity, beauty and belonging.

As another busy term draws to a close, we want to extend a heartfelt thank you to every member of our college community. Your hard work, dedication, and support have been truly invaluable. We are already looking forward to an exciting and productive term ahead.

From the College Chaplain

Dear SMCC Community,
What an amazing week we have all experienced! On Friday, 27 June we celebrated the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Heart of Christ that beats for you and I. What an amazing mystery to contemplate the Sacred Heart of Jesus, that human Heart that is full, bursting to the brim with divine love.
This is the love that God has for you and I, divine love, in a human Heart. This is what St Cardinal John Henry Newman took on as his motto when he became a bishop, “Cor ad cor loquitur” – “Heart speaks to heart.” The Heart of Christ that speaks to our heart, and our heart that speaks to Christ’s Heart.
The challenge for us all is to spend time each day encountering that Heart of Christ… How do we do that? Simple. Prayer. We encounter Christ’s Heart through our heartfelt prayers to God. That means spending time with Him each day, being in His presence. Gifting Him with the time that He has given us.
Archbishop Fulton Sheen, the great American Archbishop who will become a Saint one day, who I often quote in these newsletters, once said, “It is not particularly difficult to find thousands who will spend two or three hours a day exercising, but if you ask them to bend their knees to God in five minutes of prayer they protest that it is too long.”
How true this is, brothers and sisters! It’s not a matter of not having time, but a matter of prioritising time to gift to God. Perhaps my problem is the opposite? I can easily spend two or three hours a day bending my knees to God in prayer, but five minutes exercising? I protest that it is too long!
Back to Friday 27 June, the Sacred Heart of Jesus. What made the day even more special was the St Mary’s Annual Music Concert at the Sydney Town Hall. What an extravaganza that was. I was so proud to have been able to witness the talent of so many of our students and the hard work and dedication of our teachers, especially our Music Department. They all deserve our esteem and congratulations, well done!
Our sacramental program is nearly complete for the year, with the Sacrament of First Reconciliation and Holy Communion over, and Confirmation in July/August. To enrol your child to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation please click HERE. Make sure they have been baptised Catholic and have received their First Reconciliation and Holy Communion before they can receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.
From Saturday, 5 July to Saturday, 11 July, I’ll be away on my annual silent retreat. This is a time of intense prayer to God, without distractions of technology: mobile phone, computers etc. A time to reset and come closer to God to renew myself and to be renewed by Him. Please know of my prayers for you all, especially while I am away. I will pray that the school holidays are a blessing for your families.
God bless you all, dear brothers and sisters.

YEAR 8 REFLECTION DAY
It was a great opportunity in Week 7 for our Year 8 students to stop and reflect on this year’s theme of Unity while on retreat at the Collaroy Centre. Students participated in prayer, Mass, a time of small group reflection on what the theme of Unity means for us individually and as a community of faith. Below is a short reflection by Michael Grubelic of Year 8:
We started the day with a good trip up together to the Collaroy Centre. This is a beautiful location with a nice panoramic ocean view. We were greeted by friendly staff and a nice morning tea of carrot cake. Father Roberto led us in prayer and a reflection on what unity means for our community and us as individuals. He used many examples drawn from Pope Francis’ encyclical Fratelli Tutti. We also had a very meaningful and heartwarming Mass. This was followed by a lovely lunch and some community time. This gave us the opportunity to reflect and take in what we covered before. At the end of the day we split our time between some more input by Fr Roberto, and heading off into small group reflections amongst the beautiful scenery of the ‘Bush Chapel’. The day concluded with a good bus ride home. Some of the main takeaways are: We can all live in unity when we make the daily small decisions to do so, and this is done when it's based around the Christian understanding of love. |
WALK WITH CHRIST AND FIRST HOLY COMMUNION
It was lovely to celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi, Sunday Week 9, with some of our College Students who made their First Holy Communion with Archbishop Fisher and College Chaplain Fr Roberto. This was followed by some of our College community members joining an estimated 20,000 others on the Walk with Christ Eucharistic procession from Martin Place to the Cathedral forecourt. The College continued its proud custom of students carrying the canopy over the bishops and the Blessed Sacrament.

CONFIRMATIONS
Students who are already Baptised, have made their First Holy Communion, are in Year 6 or above and who with the support of their families/caregivers would like to be Confirmed, they are asked to please complete the attached form. Please note that your local parish (found via this link) may wish for students to receive this Sacrament at their parish – the College will assist in determining this. It is an expectation of the College that families make contact with their local parish in seeking permission to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation with the College. This Sacrament will occur at St Mary’s Cathedral on Sunday 17 August. Students must choose a Sponsor for the ceremony. They must be a Catholic who has received the Sacrament of Baptism, First Holy Communion and Confirmation, and ideally a practising Catholic. They may not be a parent. It is also encouraged, but not strictly required, that Sponsors attend all preparation classes with parents/caregivers. If a Sponsor cannot be found, please contact Mrs Angela Mills (Family Educator), to assist in finding one. Students and at least one parent/caregiver will need to attend the following preparation classes at St Mary’s Cathedral College from 12pm - 1.30pm on the following Sundays - 27 July; 3 August; 10 August. A Reflection Day and rehearsal will be held at St Mary’s Cathedral College and Cathedral during school time on Friday 15 August.
JUNIOR SCHOOL AND THE JUBILEE YEAR
It’s lovely to see our Junior School leading prayers at morning assembly for the Jubilee Year. The theme for every Jubilee year is a focus on God’s mercy, but this year there is an extra focus on those who are ‘pilgrims of hope’. I have been very impressed with the level of knowledge, thinking and communication displayed by every class in our Junior School – the students are a credit to their families and their teachers.

UPCOMING EVENTS
The Archbishop and the Dominican Sisters are leading an evening at St Mary’s Cathedral on Friday, 18 July, on the theme of deepening our understanding and relationship with Christ.
The Sisters of Charity were one of the four main Religious Orders who led St Mary’s Cathedral College for girls until 1967. You can visit their heritage centre Tuesday - Thursdays.

Thomas Hunter, Assistant Principal: Mission
From the Family Educator

As we wrap up a busy term, it’s a good time to pause and reflect on something true and beautiful about our school community and that is, that no two families are the same.
Some families are two people, others are larger, each with their own way of doing life together. Some have loud dinner tables, while others find their rhythm in quiet routines. Some are juggling work and sport and everything in between. Others are carrying heavy challenges that no one can see. Some have grandparents nearby; others are continents apart from extended family. Some speak more than one language at home. Some are new to the school; others have been here for generations.

And yet, in all this beautiful difference, there is something that binds us: a shared faith, and a shared hope in something greater than ourselves. We are a community built on love, respect, and the belief that each child is a gift from God. That unity doesn’t disappear when the school gates close for the holidays.
Even though we scatter for a few weeks, we remain connected through our shared values, our prayers, and the care we have for one another. Whether you’re going away, staying local, working through the break, or simply trying to get through each day, you are still part of this story.

God meets us wherever we are: on a beach far from Sydney, in a quiet living room, at a desk in the office, or on a long drive home from work. Our school may take a break, but our unity as a community continues.
As you step into the holidays, know that you’re not alone. You’re part of something strong and beautiful at SMCC. Many families but one heart and one faith.
Wishing you a restful and hope-filled break.
Angela Mills, Family Educator
THE WAY OF THE HEART - PARENT ART RETREAT
Last week, a small group of parents, including three wonderful SMCC mums and a gorgeous bub, joined parents from two other SCS schools for a special retreat at the art gallery.
It was a beautiful and heartfelt day of stillness, reflection, and connection, both with each other and with Jesus. Through sacred and stirring artworks, we were gently led deeper into the heart of Christ and invited to reflect on how we might live with more compassion.
This unique experience reminded us of the quiet power of beauty and the gift of pausing in the midst of busy lives. We left feeling renewed, grounded, and more open to God’s presence in our everyday.
Here is a short snapshot of our time together (video credit to Cindy Miu).
I would love to offer this retreat to our parent community again at a later date. If you’re interested in attending a future art gallery retreat please take a moment to fill out the short expression of interest form here. This will help me gauge interest and work out what days will suit our parent community best.

WALK WITH CHRIST
On Sunday 22 June, a small and faithful group from our community joined hundreds of Catholics for the Walk with Christ Eucharistic Procession through the heart of Sydney.
It was a truly beautiful experience walking together in quiet reverence, united by faith, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the city. In the midst of the ordinary, we carried something extraordinary: the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.
There was a deep sense of peace and joy as we walked, prayed, and sang alongside others from all walks of life. It was a moving reminder that we are part of something much bigger; one Church, one Body, one faith.
We hope you can join us next year.

Congratulations to our First Holy Communicants who received Jesus for the first time on Sunday, 22 June. It was such a special and joyful moment! We pray that this day marks the beginning of a lifelong friendship with Jesus and a love for the Eucharist. May the students always feel Jesus’ presence guiding, loving and nourishing them.
I’d like to also thank our parent Marija (Kolaci Cakes) for creating the most delicious celebratory cake.

SUPPORTING OUR YEAR 12 STUDENTS WITH FAITH AND ENCOURAGEMENT
As our Year 12 students prepare during the holidays for their Trial HSC exams in early Term 3, we hold them and their families in our prayers. This is a time of focus, pressure, and growth, and each young person and family will navigate it in their own way.
Whatever stage your child is at, whether in Kindergarten or Year 12, we know that learning and growing doesn’t follow a single path. What matters most is the love, encouragement, and faith that surrounds them within their families and community. May we continue to trust in the words of Jeremiah 29:11 - "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
Let’s hold all our students in prayer, especially our seniors, as they take the steps on the next chapter of their journey.

WRAP WITH LOVE - CALL FOR KNITTING NEEDLS AND WOOL/YARN
We would love to launch a knitting club at school next term to help create squares which will become blankets and other warm items for those in need as the coldest months set in. This is a beautiful way for students to learn a new skill while giving back to the community.
If you have any spare knitting needles sizes 4-8 or balls of yarn/wool at home that you’d be happy to donate, we’d be so grateful. All donations can be dropped off at the school office.
Thank you for helping us wrap others in warmth and love.

From the Assistant Principal: Senior School
Dear Parents, Carers, Staff and Students,
This year’s Annual Music Concert was a showcase of musical excellence. The theme of unity was perfectly encapsulated through a varied repertoire. We were entertained by the talented musicians of this College. The annual concert is a long standing tradition at this school, and this year’s performances were exceptional. It was wonderful to see and hear the broad repertoire that our students undertake with their performances. This year's finale was a most uplifting experience with a full orchestra accompanying our massed choir. I would like to thank all the students for their involvement as well as our tremendous music staff for their tireless efforts to put on such a fine show.
Each student in Year 9-10 will have received their semester one academic report this week. It is now timely for students in collaboration with their parents/carers to review their results and begin to set plans for continued growth in semester two. Parent collaboration will be key with our upcoming parent/teacher/student conferences. These will be held via zoom in week 1 of next term. These meetings are important in the feedback and feedforward cycle that underpins effective student learning and growth. It is important for families to reflect with their son on these meetings and set some goals for semester two.
In week 8, as part of their phronesis (practical wisdom) program, Year 12 engaged in the annual Seniors Breakfast. This year the students heard from two alumni who have had varied work and life experiences and they imparted upon the boys some of their learnings from their different pathways. Our guest speakers were Mr John O’Mahony (Class of 1997) senior partner from Deloittes Access Economics and Christian Leung (Class of 2004), Director Ray White Concord and Five Dock. Each speaker touched on their post-school journey and how the values and traditions of SMCC set them up for success in their lives. The young men of year 12 were able to share a meal together and ask each of our guest questions. This phronesis lesson provided for our students to develop character traits that are reflective, collaborative and strategic. It enabled the boys to consider the next steps in their own life journeys. We thank each of our former students for their presence at this memorable occasion.

Last week Year 11 commenced a process of discernment in relation to senior student leadership opportunities at the college. The process commenced with input around leadership during their phronesis lesson. As these boys edge towards their final year of secondary education, consideration is given to the type of leader they want to be and the legacy they intend to leave behind. It was impressed upon the boys that leadership at SMCC is modeled on the servant leadership of Jesus Christ and that the values and attitudes students portray are noticed by those younger. Leadership is not a popularity contest. The process over the next term will inform the appointment of our senior student leadership team for the year ahead. We wish the Year 11 cohort the very best with this process.
I wish everyone an enjoyable and restful winter break and look forward to a positive Term 3.
Kind regards,
Chris Maoudis, Assistant Principal: Senior School
From the Assistant Principal: Middle School

David Timillero, Assistant Principal: Middle School
From the Assistant Principal: Junior School
Our younger students have had some fantastic adventures this term. Stage 1 went on a special excursion to the Cathedral, Royal Botanic Garden and State Library. Year 3 got to explore the Australian Museum and our Kindergarten celebrated their 100th day of school with a wonderful presentation, morning tea for families, wonderful costumes and great fun!

Community and faith played a big part in the term too. Stage 1 led a beautiful assembly all about Mary Help of Christians and St Mary's Day was definitely a highlight for everyone, with a whole school Mass, a walkathon and lots of enjoyable activities.
Beyond these events, our students also had great opportunities to shine and build new skills. Year 3 and Year 4 enjoyed a Netball Gala Day and every student from Year 1 to Year 4 took part in the SMCC Public Speaking Competition, which was fantastic for building their confidence and communication skills in front of their friends. Well done to all the Junior School students who were recognised with Virtues in Action Awards, St Mary’s Merits, Bronze and Silver Awards for their consistent effort and positive contributions throughout the term!
KINDERGARTEN: LITTLE SCIENTISTS, BIG DISCOVERIES!
In Science, Kindergarten have been learning all about the Living World! Our young scientists created their very own mini habitats, carefully thinking about what living things need to survive. From leafy jungles to sandy deserts, each habitat shows incredible creativity! We also took great care of our bean plants, watching them grow taller every day.

STAGE 1: EXCURSION TO ST MARY'S CATHEDRAL
Stage 1 students had a wonderful opportunity to visit St Mary’s Cathedral as part of our Religious Education learning. Guided by Fr Roberto, we explored the sacred space and discovered the signs and symbols that help bring us closer to God.
Students learned about important features of the church, including the bishop’s chair, altar, tabernacle, sanctuary lamp and ambo. We practised genuflecting reverently and took time to pause and pray the Hail Mary in front of the image of Our Lady of the Southern Cross.
Students were fascinated by the stained-glass windows, which told stories of Jesus' life, the saints and the Church in Australia. Our journey concluded in the Crypt, where we saw the final resting place of our class patron Fr John Therry.
Thank you to Fr Roberto for leading us on a meaningful and memorable excursion!

YEAR 3: EXPLORING 3D SHAPES!
Our Year 3 students have been having a fantastic time exploring the world of 3D objects! They've been busy creating their own models using playdough and a variety of other exciting materials, then comparing the different properties of their creations. It's been a brilliant way to learn and a whole lot of fun!

YEAR 4: THE ART OF AWARENESS
As part of our Phronesis focus on awareness, Year 4 explored what we notice when we really look at one another. We drew each other by using our non-dominant hand whilst also only looking at the other person's face. The results were very entertaining! This task reminded us to slow down and remember to focus on the small details of everyday life.

Wishing all families a safe, restful holiday. We look forward to welcoming everyone back in Term 3!

GREENING THE FUTURE: Year 8 Showcase Sustainable Design in Partnership with UNSW and Vertikal
As part of their studies on sustainability and Water in the World, Year 8 students at St Mary’s Cathedral College recently completed a transformative 10-week project in partnership with the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and green infrastructure specialists, Vertikal Company. The challenge: to design and pitch a vertical green space for the College—bringing environmental learning into a meaningful, real-world context.
Students were fortunate to work alongside leading experts from UNSW including Dr Xiaoqi Feng (Greenspaces and Wellbeing), Dr Kefeng Zheng (Water Management), and Professor Greg Leslie (Engineering). These experts provided valuable insight into the health, water, and engineering dimensions of green infrastructure, drawing connections to their own work—such as UNSW’s current vertical greening project at the Royal Hospital for Women.
Complementing this academic perspective, James Martin (Director) and Jarryd Hardwick (NSW Construction Manager) from Vertikal offered ongoing feedback throughout the project and were also present at the final showcase. Their industry insights helped students understand the practical considerations of vertical green design and gave real-world relevance to their classroom learning.
The project culminated in a dynamic final showcase day, where each class presented its top design pitch. Judged by Principal Kerrie McDiarmid, Professor Greg Leslie, and the Vertikal team, the event was a celebration of student creativity, sustainability thinking, and collaboration.
In an exciting conclusion to the project, the final selected design will be constructed on site, turning students’ ideas into reality and leaving a lasting legacy at the College. This initiative is a shining example of authentic learning in action, where students see the real impact of their work beyond the classroom.
Congratulations to all Year 8 students for their outstanding efforts and to our partners at UNSW and Vertikal for helping bring this inspiring learning experience to life.

CHEMISTRY TITRATION COMPETITION
How does one titrate? A decades-old question that has stumped HSC Chemistry students for years, from burettes to pipettes, from acids to bases, from neutralisation reactions to conical flasks, titration is not for the faint of heart, but for the kings and noblemen who wish to face up against this gruelling challenge. On Friday 13 July, nine of St Mary’s finest, brightest, and bravest chemistry students decided to trek to UTS so that they may battle and slay the monster of titrating … and slay they did. Although I myself and some of my other team members may have struggled in this uphill battle, three select members from our school have come out as true specimens of their species. Nathan Somboonvarakit, Luke Budi, and Edmund Li managed to secure second place out of all the teams and out of all the schools that competed. With the lower scores being superior, as a team, out of 3.0 × 10^4 possible points, their total team score was only 42 (for reference, my team had a score of 653). As for the individual points, Edmund Li got a score of 25 (really good for a Yr 11 by the way, I can contest), Luke Budi got 16, and Nathan Somboonvarakit, out of all his glamour and glory, managed to get a score of 1, that being, 1/10000. As a notable shoutout, David Vu (David #2 for clarification) got a score of 9, but we don’t talk about him because he wasn’t a part of the winning team.
The day began with chirping birds and a crisp winter's breeze, almost as a foreshadowing of the ultimate result. After putting on our lab coats, we managed to secure our benches in the UTS Superlab, where we commenced the glorious and righteous fight—one that required pinpoint precision and accuracy. Each of us had to find the concentration (more specifically, molarity) of a sample of acetic acid we were given. This is done by dropping the base from a burette into a conical flask, which contains 25 mL of acid, which was collected, measured and deposited via a pipette. Using the calculation C1V1 = C2V2, by measuring the amount of base dropped, chemists use algebra to find the final concentration. Ultimately, Team SBL (Somboonvarakit, Budi, & Li) did this the best, walking home with a prize second only to the Nobel Prize itself, a beautiful, branded UTS Cap.
But as I conclude, and as I contemplate the experience I had, I realised that this was more than just a titration competition, it was something much greater, it was a lesson. Although my team’s scores (mine specifically) may not have been of the highest quality, at least I now know that I’m better off just sticking to theoretical chemistry.
David Merodio, Year 11 Chemistry

EDUCATION PERFECT INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGES CHAMPIONSHIP
Earlier this term, students in Years 8 and 9 studying Italian were given the opportunity to compete in the International Languages Championship on Education Perfect. To compete, all students had to do was translate words from English to Italian and vice versa, earning points which contributed to both their personal score and the school's total points. The competition ran for one week, and thanks to the efforts of some of our Year 8 and 9 students we achieved some excellent results:
- 184th globally (out of 1804 schools)
- 14th overall in Italian
- 5th for Italian in NSW
We had a number of students who won awards in the competition, and we are very proud of their efforts! Congratulations go to the following students:
| 1st Place: | Mateo Amoedo (Emerald Award - 5293 points) |
| 2nd Place: | Harley Gillespie (Emerald Award - 5122 points) |
| 3rd Place: | Darian Bekoe IV (Silver Award - 2516 points) |
| Bronze Awards: | John Habib, Alexander Huynh, Elie Khalil and James Crowton |
| Credit Award: | Jayden Mulia |
We look forward to seeing some more excellent results with the NSW Language Championship coming up at the end of July!

SMCC SYDNEY TOWN HALL CONCERT
A hearty congratulations to all student musicians who performed at the very recent SMCC Annual Music Concert, “Unity”, in the grandeur and heritage of the iconic Sydney Town Hall on Friday 27 June. The evening, which showcased the wonderful and varied musical talents of our student community, was a resounding success where the enthusiastic audience was treated to a variety of performances. It has been inspiring to observe and hear all the wonderful performances and observe the musical growth and developing confidence in our student musicians over the past term of dedicated preparations and rehearsals.
This year’s theme, “Unity”, resonated deeply through a shared sense of purpose and belonging by bringing the wider SMCC student community together through song and music; musical contributions of all boys and girls in Years 5-7; girls performing alongside boys; selection of soloists, ensembles and of performance repertoire; and the massed College Choir singing the Finale medley songs: Unity, Where is the Love? and We Are the World, and the newly composed College hymn, Maria Mater Gratiae.
The evening’s program saw musically refined performances from the entire Years 5-12 College community in the Finale medley and newly composed College hymn, three rock bands, Special Project Orchestra, Special Project Concert Band, Years 5 & 6 Choir, Year 7 Choir, Cathedral Strings, Year 12 Music, Choristers, Scholars, Cathedral Choir, and ‘cello and piano solos.
Sincere thanks to the Music Department and SMCC staff who worked tirelessly, contributing to the countless hours of planning, organising, rehearsing and presenting this year’s wonderful concert. A fantastic team effort and magnificent concert all up!

SMCC CONCERT BANDS & SCS EISTEDDFOD
This term, our Concert Bands have been working diligently in preparation for not only the Sydney Town Hall Concert but also the Sydney Catholic Schools Eisteddfod. Under the direction of our Director of Concert Bands, Mr Mark Brown, two of our Concert Bands were tasked with a new initiative to present at the SCS Eisteddfod. It has been several years since the concert bands have performed in a competitive environment.
On Tuesday 17 and Wednesday 18 June, both the Special Projects and Primary Concert Bands participated in the annual SCS Eisteddfod at Marist College Eastwood. Congratulations to both concert bands who took out 1st prize in the Instrumental Category in the ensemble section of the Eisteddfod!
The Special Project Concert Band performed a classic of the wind band repertoire, Dreyton Hall Esprit by Francis McBeth. The adjudicator, Mr James Pensini praised the quality of the band’s sound and musicianship, awarding them first place in an experienced musical field of six senior bands from other SCS Colleges.
The Primary School Concert band was also outstanding in its division performing ‘March of the Romans’ by Michael Sweeney. The adjudicator once again was impressed by the ensemble’s sound coming from such young musicians and loved their posture and commitment to their music making.
Of special mention, the Special Project Concert Band received a golden ticket and has been invited to perform at the 2025 SCS Eisteddfod Showcase to be held at The Seymour Centre on Tuesday 29 July at 7:00-8:30pm. Tickets and information to this SCS Eisteddfod Showcase can be found at this link.
Congratulations to both Concert Bands!

ARTIST EVOLUTION PROGRAM
Congratulations goes to Elijah Alkair who was successful in gaining a place in the ‘Show Group’ of the Artist’s Evolution talent development program, ‘Unleash Your Voice”, through SCS Arts-HQ. Earlier this term, Elijah sung at the Mission: One heart many voices conference.
For students interested in this program in the future, it is designed to establish a strong foundation in vocal skills, stage presence, and teamwork. Students work under the expert mentorship of Arts-HQ Artists in Residence, who can enhance their techniques, collaborate with fellow artists, and grow as a performer in a fun and supportive music environment.
2025 SCS EISTEDDFOD
Over the coming holiday period, a number of our instrumentalists will be busily practising and putting the final polishing touches to their pieces as they prepare to perform in the SCS Eisteddfod solo instrumental sections. We wish all solo performers the very best and look forward to hearing of your successes!
Best wishes and happy music making over the holidays,
Dr Stefanovych Roberts, Acting Leader of Music

JUNIOR B FOOTBALL GRAND FINAL
Despite entering the grand final as underdogs, our team showed incredible spirit and determination. We played with energy and heart, however, the opposition proved too strong on the day and we ended the season with a 0-3 loss. The team should be proud of their effort and teamwork. They gained valuable experience this year, and look to build on this foundation next year.
SENIOR FOOTBALL GRAND FINAL
In a gripping grand final that showcased our team’s superior skill and determination, the scoreboard told a different story. Despite dominating possession and creating the better chances, a late goal against the run of play titled the result away from SMCC. The boys pushed hard for an equaliser in the dying minutes, but the breakthrough never came. Still, the performance was full of promise, and they now turn their focus to the Sydney Quarterfinals- hungry, sharper, and ready to bounce back
