As we draw near to the joyous celebration of Christmas, we are reminded of the profound message of hope, peace, and love that resonates from the birth of Christ. In the Gospel of Luke, we hear the angel proclaim, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the city of David a Savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord.” (Luke 2:10-11).
This announcement speaks to the heart of Christmas: the arrival of Jesus, who brings light into the darkness and transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary. It reminds us that God’s love reaches us wherever we are, calling us to embody His compassion and care for one another.
As we celebrate, let us take a moment to reflect on the ways we can bring the light of Christ into the lives of others. In the midst of the busyness of the season, may we find time for prayer, gratitude, and acts of kindness. Christmas is not only a time for giving and receiving, but for renewing our faith, strengthening our connections, and sharing the joy of the Gospel with those around us.
This Christmas, we give thanks for all those who have been part of our St Mary’s story—past, present, and future—and for the grace of God that continues to guide us.
As we prepare to step into 2025, a year of transformation as we become a K-12 dual-campus coeducational college, we are filled with hope for the journey ahead. Like the shepherds and Magi who followed the star, we look forward with faith and anticipation, trusting in God’s plan for our community.
May this Christmas be a time of peace, joy, and renewal for you and your families.
END OF OUR BICENTENNIAL YEAR
As we conclude the Bicentennial Year of St Mary’s Cathedral College, we reflect upon a year of faith, celebration, and community that has marked this historic milestone. This year has been an extraordinary journey of honoring our past, celebrating the present, and looking to the future.
This term we concluded our Bicentennial events. On Friday, 25 October, we celebrated the launch of the St Mary’s Student Museum, a collaboration with the Australian Museum that reflects our commitment to innovative learning and our Pathways and partnerships programs. The year concluded with the spectacular Bicentenary Finale at the Yallamundi Rooms, at the Sydney Opera House on Thursday, 21 November. This was a fitting celebration of our legacy and with so many members of our community present a fantastic way to conclude our festivities.
This Bicentennial Year has been a testament to the enduring faith, tradition, and vision of our College community. As we move into 2025, transitioning to a K-12 dual-campus coeducational college, we carry forward the legacy of St Mary’s Cathedral College with pride and hope, ready to embrace the opportunities of the future. Thank you to everyone who made this year unforgettable.

On behalf of the students of St Mary’s Cathedral College, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated staff for their unwavering commitment and hard work in supporting Year 12 through their HSC journey.

Year 12 Students gathered to mark their 2024 HSC results:

FAREWELL TO STAFF
This term we said farewell to some of our St Mary’s staff.
- We thank Ms Georgia Andreacchio for her dedication to the Performing Arts faculty and for her commitment to the College for the past 6 years. She has worked tirelessly in Drama to provide an engaging learning environment for our students from Primary to the HSC years.
- We wish Ms Elizabeth Seares every success as she moves to pursue a leadership position in 2025.
- We also thank Ms Louisa Cunningham for her time as part of our Visual Arts team. We wish them every success in their future endeavours
Kerrie McDiarmid, College Principal
From the Dean of Mission
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our families and friends a safe, peaceful and joyful Christmas and New Year period. The bicentenary year of the college has been a great occasion to look back and reflect with gratitude over many great things. At the heart of all these has been the consistent efforts of many people who had/have a strong belief and hope in the transformative significance of Catholic education for the greater good.
Parents/carers, teachers, pastors (starting with Fr John Therry) and of course the students themselves, have all lived over the past two hundred years at St Mary’s the importance of a message that is now over two thousand years old – to love God and to love one’s neighbour who is everybody (Mark 12:30-31). One of my hopes and prayers this Advent and Christmas time is for all members of our college community, including our alumni, to be kept safe and inspired by the many examples of love and care they have experienced at our college over the years.
YEAR 6 GRADUATION
It was lovely to see our Year 6 students celebrate the completion of their primary school education at a Mass and morning tea this Term. Fr Don, Dean and Administrator of the Cathedral, led our Mass at which our Year 6 Class Captain, Henry Vincent Hull, gave the following speech. I would like to thank and acknowledge Mrs Fiona Roy who was an excellent teacher of this year group for 2024 as well as the Instructional Leader for Religious Education.
Speech by Henry Vincent Hull (Class Captain):
As we embark on our final days of primary school education, let us stop and reflect on the memories we have made and ponder the memories we hope to make in the future.
We are a special group of students, each bringing our own kind of something special to St Mary’s Cathedral College. Whether we started in Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 or Year 6 we are like a family that has continued to grow each year. Like all families, we’ve had our differences, our challenges, fun times and we’ve celebrated success together. At the core of our class family has been Jesus Christ, guiding us on our journey.
We’ve had teachers that inspire us to be the best we can be. Mrs Roy especially has cared for and nurtured us, always making us feel safe at school.
This college provides us students with so many wonderful opportunities that we may not have received elsewhere. It is important that we embrace those opportunities and make the best of them in order to flourish, being the best versions of ourselves.
We have spoken a lot about legacy this year, in particular this term. Some great legacies have been created by those students who have gone before us over the past 200 years. It is now our time to leave our own legacy for those that follow us. As your primary captain, the legacy I hope to leave is the good leader of the 200th year of St Mary's Cathedral College, who was respected by everyone and who listened to everyone's ideas to make them come to fruition.
To my fellow classmates, thank you for the memories we’ve created and all the best transitioning to Year 7. To the teachers that have given us wonderful learning experiences, thank you. To Mrs McDiarmid, Mr Timillero and the college leadership team, thank you for all that you do.

YEAR 6, 8 AND 10 SCS RELIGIOUS EDUCATION TESTS
Each year all Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) participate in an RE Test across years 6, 8 and 10. This test ranges in difficulty and assesses several key areas of the RE curriculum. I wanted to put in a quick word of acknowledgement for our two leaders of religious education, Mrs Fiona Roy (primary) and Mrs Charlotte Claxton-Fante (secondary), whose great efforts have seen our students achieve outstanding results in this year’s tests. Our College is blessed to have such good leaders and teachers of religious education.
Thomas Hunter, Dean of Mission
ARCHBISHOP STUDENT LEADERSHIP FORUM (by Tiernan Cargill - Liturgy Prefect)
Nearly 300 Year 11 students attended the annual Student Leadership Forum at St. Mary’s Cathedral College. This was a great opportunity to engage with peers from other systemic and independent schools from across Sydney. The day was held in November and acts as a formative experience for future student leaders.
Through the inspiring address of Anthony Fisher, the Archbishop of Sydney, he presented three key elements for all Catholic leaders: humility, courage, and joy. With the use of Jesus as the “foot washer,” he dares the students to lead and serve with the same kind of heart and humility.
The Archbishop also said that one should be bold to pursue what is worth pursuing, not being afraid to risk failure or judgement. Lastly, he reminded the students of their responsibility as witnesses of joy in the face of today’s toxic and predominantly secular culture. “Christian joy,” he said, “is the anchor in our lives,” gives hope and inspiration to those around them.
Among the discussions that followed, issues ranged from the negative impact of social media and the pressure to consume to the difficulty of practicing Christian faith openly in a secular and dismissive culture. Students also discussed ways to develop faith in their school communities - the Archbishop recalled how, as a teenager himself, one student leader’s devotion inspired him.
With that, the forum concluded with a unifying prayer, reinforcing faith as a cornerstone for leaders. Students reflected on this experience, whereby, collectively with others, they were sharing and addressing common challenges, whilst drawing inspiration from one another.
Serving as a networking forum but equally a call to action for all young leaders of what they can accomplish in a profound way in the name of “Leaders of Faith and Action” in their schools and communities.

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS INITIATIVE
Mental health is an understated issue. It is often not spoken about. People, particularly young men, feel ashamed or uncomfortable to talk about their feelings.
As a prefect body, it is our intent to end this stigma and open up conversations about mental health. Our “Mental Health Day” was designed to raise awareness and kick-start this dialogue; a mufti-day which raised money for Matt Talbot (notably their mental health branch). We were thrilled to see the initiative be so widely supported by the school community, and would like to sincerely thank everyone for their generous donations.
Some students may have also noticed senior students wearing a green ribbon badge pin. The green ribbon is designed as a symbol of mental health awareness, and serves as a continual reminder to support one another, particularly in times of need. Various posters have been stuck around the school to supplement this, featuring various mental health tips from the college counsellor, Mrs Jamieson. Students also now have access to a ‘question and feedback box’ outside the counsellors office. Anyone is welcome to use this box to anonymously ask Mrs Jamieson questions, which will be answered in a newly-established ‘Mental Health Matters Newsletter.’
It is important to realise that mental health is something which affects everyone—it is not a disorder, nor is it a disease. Mental health affects different individuals uniquely and, as such, it is challenging to recognise when friends and family are struggling. While poor mental health cannot (and should not) be ‘fixed,’ it is necessary to build an understanding surrounding the issue and the effects it can have on individuals. No one should feel they are struggling alone.
We would like to thank the college executive for supporting us in these initiatives. We are also grateful for Mrs Jamieson’s extensive support and continued commitment to mental health.
Best wishes and a very merry Christmas to you all.
The Prefect Team.

CHRISTMAS MASSES AT THE CATHEDRAL

From the Dean of Senior School
As 2024 draws to a close, we reflect on what has been an extraordinary bicentenary year at St Mary’s Cathedral College. The past twelve months have been filled with milestones, celebrations, and moments of gratitude, culminating in a busy and vibrant final term.
In the last few weeks, we celebrated the talents and achievements of our students through a series of events that showcased their dedication and hard work. The end-of-year music concerts were a particular highlight, with our talented musicians captivating audiences with their performances. These concerts were a testament to the thriving music culture at our College, and we commend all participants and staff who made these events so memorable.
Year 10 students embraced the opportunity to prepare for their next academic journey through the Transition to Stage 6 program. This initiative equipped them with the skills and mindset needed for senior studies, ensuring a confident and smooth progression into the next phase of their education. Additionally, our Year 10 students participated in Respectful Relationships workshops in collaboration with St Clare’s College, Waverley. These sessions fostered meaningful dialogue and reinforced the values of mutual respect and understanding that are central to our community.
Last Wednesday, the End of Year Awards Assembly provided another opportunity to honour our students’ achievements across academic, co-curricular, and spiritual domains. We applauded the boys in the senior school who received Academic Excellence Awards and Academic Growth Awards, as well as the recipients of special awards in each year group. It was inspiring to see the fruits of their hard work and dedication throughout the year.
Last Friday, we came together as a school community to celebrate the End of Year Mass at the Cathedral. This special occasion offered a moment of reflection and thanksgiving for the blessings of the past year and was a fitting conclusion to our bicentenary celebrations.
Year 9 and 10 students also received their end-of-year reports, highlighting their accomplishments and areas for future growth. We congratulate those who achieved academic excellence and celebrate the personal bests and learning growth of every student. These reports reflect the commitment of our boys to striving for their best, and we are proud of their efforts.
As we conclude this momentous year, we extend our heartfelt thanks to our students, families, and staff for their unwavering support and contributions. Your dedication has made 2024 a year to remember, and we are deeply grateful for the sense of community that defines St Mary’s Cathedral College.
On behalf of the College, we wish you and your loved ones a blessed Christmas and a restful summer break. May the joy of the season fill your hearts, and may you return refreshed and ready for an exciting 2025. We look forward to continuing our journey together in faith and learning.

ST MARY'S CATHEDRAL COLLEGE MUSEUM OPENING
In an exciting collaboration with the Australian Museum, our students undertook the ambitious task of designing and curating our very own museum in the Hall foyer. The museum, launched just last week, showcased the creativity, hard work, and professionalism of our students. The Australian Museum staff praised their efforts, describing the exhibition as a testament to the high standards of student collaboration and innovation. This partnership has been so successful that discussions are already underway for future projects, ensuring a continued and meaningful collaboration in the years to come.

SEMESTER TWO REPORTS
The Semester Two reports for Years 3-10 were published on Wednesday, 11 December, and are now available for access via Compass online. If you encounter any difficulties accessing the Parent Portal, please contact our student services team at the College, and they will be happy to assist you with any issues.
Please note that the reports will only be visible on the desktop version of Compass. We encourage all students to take this opportunity to thoroughly review their reports and engage in meaningful discussions with their parents. This process will enable them to identify areas of strength and areas for improvement, and develop effective strategies for the upcoming year.
YEAR 12 HSC RESULTS RELEASE
We are eagerly anticipating the release of the Year 12 HSC results on Wednesday, 18 December. This marks the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and perseverance by our students. We are incredibly proud of their efforts and achievements throughout this challenging journey. As they await their results, we wish them all the best and hope that their hard work is rewarded.
To celebrate this milestone, we are inviting all Year 12 students to a special morning tea on the morning of the results release. This will be a wonderful opportunity to come together, reflect on their achievements, and look forward to the future. Congratulations to all our Year 12 students, and we look forward to celebrating your successes!
Finally, we would like to congratulate all our students for their hard work and dedication throughout the year. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed, and we are incredibly proud of your achievements. As we approach the end of the year, we wish you and your families a restful break and a very Merry Christmas. UTS STARTUP SUMMIT
The 2024 UTS Startups Summit, attended by Year 9 Commerce, was held on 3 December, at ICC Sydney Theatre. It was a large-scale event aimed at inspiring entrepreneurship among high school students in Years 9 and 10. Organised by the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) Startups initiative, the event highlighted the transformative potential of technology-enabled entrepreneurship.
Key features of the summit included:
- Inspirational Talks: Young entrepreneurs shared their journeys, challenges, and successes to encourage students to explore entrepreneurial opportunities in the tech sector. This included a talk from Canva founder and billionaire Cliff Obrecht.
- Diversity and Inclusion: The event showcased the accessibility of entrepreneurship for individuals from diverse backgrounds and highlighted how tech skills are relevant across industries. This included entrepreneurship ideas catering for people with disabilities.
The students gained a great deal of knowledge with key takeaways including they are never too young to start their entrepreneurial journey and resilience is crucial to success.
PLAYCONOMICS
This Term, Commerce, Economics and Business Studies students have been participating in Playconomics. Playconomics, developed by the University of New South Wales (UNSW), is an innovative and interactive online platform designed to teach economics fundamentals through engaging, game-based learning. The platform immerses students in simulated real-world economic scenarios, such as managing a virtual economy, making policy decisions, and evaluating their outcomes. Students complete the program alongside university participants and earn partial credit toward a university course upon successful completion.
I would like to congratulate the following three students who finished in the top 10 out of a total of 2500 students.
Nathaniel Hiu (Year 11) - 2nd Overall
Kevin Yu (Year 11) - 4th Overall
Brayden Chu (Year 11) - 8th Overall

“EKPHRASTIC POETRY”
7ENG2 visited St Mary’s Cathedral and visited the “Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary” and wrote poetry, inspired by the “Great North Window: The Coronation of Our Lady in Heaven: The 5th Glorious Mystery of the Rosary”.
Here are some of the students musings about their experience:
“The beautiful colour in the intricately detailed windows inspired my poem about the North Window."
“The serenity I experienced, looking at Mary, Queen of Heaven, gave me inspiration. My love for Mary has been spelled out in my poem.”
“The bright and vibrant colours filled my eyes and heart.”
“The calmness from the art on the window gave me the idea to write a rhyming poem about Mary.”
“The vivid stained-glass depictions of Divine Grace inspired me with multiple stories in one piece of art.”
“The gift of love I felt when I saw the Queen of Heaven window inspired me to write a poem about her love. The addition of all the Saints and Jesus sitting by her side, made me write about the inspiration and power she has.”
“The bright shine of the windows blessed me with joy and those who have experienced Mary’s love.”
“Trapped in glass, showing pride for the rulers of Heaven. The front of the Cathedral, being its core, is filled with a variety of colours and emotions.”
“The colourful windows showed me an image of Mary and her gift of love. This window inspired me to write a poem.”

LINGUAFEST COMPETITION
Each year, our Stage 5 Italian students are tasked with making a short film in Italian as part of the MLTANSW's Linguafest Competition. The requirements of the competition are:
- The film must be no longer than two minutes in length
- It must be in the target language with English subtitles
- It must be filmed and edited by the students themselves
- It must tie in with a certain theme and contain a signature item
This year, the theme was 'an adventure' and the signature item was a frying pan. Our Year 10 students spent time at various points in Terms 2 and 3 going through the process of creating their short films, from drafting and writing their scripts, to filming and editing the final cut. After viewing the class's submissions, our entry for the competition was chosen and we submitted the film L'avventura di Nonna Francesca (The Adventure of Nonna Francesca). This film told the tale of Nonna Francesca, who, after going on a magical adventure, taught us that the secret to a good meal was 'L'amore. Senza amore, il cibo non ha sapore' (Love. Without love, food has no taste).
After entering our film into the competition, we soon found out that it had been chosen as a finalist! We waited with bated breath until the screening of the films in Week 6. After seeing the great variety of films from many different languages, it was time for the awards. L'avventura di Nonna Francesca ended up taking out two awards; it received the award for 'Best Comedy', and also the 'People's Choice Award', which meant it was voted as the favourite film by all of the people watching the screening.
Our congratulations go to the creators of the film, Daniel Andrews, Billy Clare, Jamie Naffah, Riley Power and Daniel Russo. It was a wonderful group effort that was praised very highly by the convenors of the competition.

From TAS
Congratulations to Kane McCarren, HSC class of 2024. His Industrial Technology Timber Project has been selected for the 2024 SHAPE exhibition. His project and folio will be on display at the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct in March 2024. His Display case demonstrated an exemplary level of craftsmanship and skill.
Congratulations must also go to the other students from Industrial Technology Graphics and the Industrial Technology Timber class who were also nominated for SHAPE. Each year only a small percentage of students are selected for exhibition and nomination is also a tremendous recognition for their hard work and speaks to the quality of their work.

From Primary
As the year draws to a close, I would like to congratulate the Primary students on their commitment to learning and engaging in college life. This term the students have participated in a weekly swimming program which has allowed them to hone their swimming skills as well enjoy a refreshing relief from the extreme heat we have encountered of late.
All three classes have participated in a class stage production in their Drama classes. They have learnt lines, practised onstage presence and performed their plays for the other primary classes. Perhaps we have a few budding Oscar award winners amongst the group! Well done to all for your amazing work! Primary students also participated in a music concert in week 8 which showcased their many talents. It was a wonderful experience listening to such talented musicians.
For Year 6, it has been a very busy term as they wrap up their Primary education. Amongst many opportunities, they travelled to Canberra overnight to support their learning in History about Australia as a Nation and in week 8 they had their Year 6 Graduation Mass and farewell morning tea.
Thanks for a great year primary students! Have a blessed and Holy Christmas.

MAMMA MIA - THE MUSICAL (by Justin, Year 10)
I auditioned for the role in Mamma Mia at St Vincent's College, Potts Point and was successful in gaining the role of Eddie, the Bartender. Three other boys from local schools were also successful in gaining roles in the production. For three terms we were involved in rehearsals. Initially we rehearsed every Tuesday and Thursday after school, in which I had to rush to get there as soon as I could as they started at 3pm.
The best part of being in the musical was chatting to the other boys and girls because they also shared my passion for theatre.
Coming up to the three night performance from 20 to 22 November meant a full rehearsal the Thursday before and Sunday, and a late finish on the day before being a full dress rehearsal. I was feeling stressed and nervous before the first show but I managed to pull through. I was shocked to see Mr Foulger sitting in the front row of the first night's performance, but I didn't realise until the second half of the show. I became more excited and confident with each performance.
The show experience was also helpful for my resume of being in the theatre in the future. I am hoping to do more acting and a short course at NIDA.
I would like to say thank you to Ms Johnson, the Director, Sage & Polly, Assistant Directors and the staff at St Vincent’s who kept us comfortable. I would also like to thank all the students who welcomed me into their school grounds.

MICHAEL BELL BASKETBALL SHIELD
On Friday, December 6, St Mary’s Cathedral College faced De La Salle Revesby in the special commemorative Michael Bell Shield - an annual basketball match showcasing school spirit, exceptional skill, sportsmanship, and determination.
The Junior team set the tone early with their cohesive teamwork and sharp execution, securing a decisive victory to kick off the event.
In the Senior match, the game was a fierce contest. Despite Cathedral's relentless effort, De La Salle surged ahead in the second half, fueled by a series of impressive shots, ultimately taking the win.
The pressure was on for the Intermediate team to settle the shield in the deciding game. It was a close match, but Cathedral’s grit and determination shone through, clinching a hard-fought victory and ensuring the shield returned home!
Congratulations to all teams for their effort and spirit, and a big thank you to De La Salle Revesby for hosting another memorable event.

SCS MOUNTAIN BIKING
The SCS Mountain Bike Gala Day was held at Garden MTB Trail in the stunning Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan. Cathedral had 7 competitors on the day, It was a very challenging ride for the boys, who had to compete in a time trial, an individual race, and a relay. The boys thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to compete against other mountain bikers from all over the Sydney diocese. Congratulations to Finn O'Flaherty (9th in Intermediate) and Max Economou (6th in Senior) who placed in the top ten in their individual races.

SCS FUTSAL
The Year 7-9 Futsal Gala Day was held at Perry Park on Wednesday, 11 December. Our team consisted of students in Year 7 and 8 only, and our boys were outmuscled by the older opposition. Nevertheless, our boys enjoyed the challenge of competing against the older and tougher competitors, and although they didn’t win a match, our team was quite competitive.
SCS BADMINTON
The SCS Badminton Gala Day was held on Thursday, 12 December at Alpha Egerton Badminton Centre. Cathedral sent a squad of 16 players across the Junior, Intermediate and Senior age categories. Impressively, 7 out of 8 teams progressed past the pool stage. 4 teams progressed to the round of 16, and 1 team progressed to the quarter finals. These results are outstanding, considering there were almost 600 students competing in the tournament.

PREMIER'S READING CHALLENGE
Over the course of the year, from late February to the end of August, students around NSW have been reading in an effort to not only expand their minds, but also complete the long-running NSW Premier's Reading Challenge. Students must read some texts from an assigned (and copious) list but can select others based on their interests. These must be logged online and verified. It is pleasing to see that so many Cathedral students met the assigned target (reading between 20 and 35 books, depending on age) this year. Special mention should be made of three students who have completed the challenge every year from Year 3 to Year 9 and who received the Premier's Medal at the academic assembly in December: Finn O'Flaherty, Rorey Power, and Marcelino Tjiputra.
